Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How does the speech evaluation work?
Our speech evaluation system uses advanced AI technology to analyze your pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy. Simply enter the text you want to practice, record your speech or upload an audio file, and our system will provide detailed feedback with scores and improvement suggestions.
What file formats are supported for audio upload?
We support MP3 and WAV audio file formats. You can either record directly using your microphone or upload a pre-recorded audio file for evaluation.
What do the different evaluation categories mean?
We offer three evaluation modes: Word Reading (for individual words), Sentence Reading (for complete sentences), and Chapter Reading (for longer passages). Each mode provides detailed analysis tailored to the content type, including pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and rhythm.
How do I find and select a topic to practice?
Use the search box to find topics by keywords, or use the level filter to show topics by difficulty level (e.g., junior, IELTS). Click on any topic in the table to select it and view detailed practice options. You can sort topics by clicking on the column headers (Topic, Level, or Time) to organize them alphabetically or by duration.
How do I sort topics in the table?
Click on any column header (Topic, Level, or Time) to sort the topics. The first click sorts in ascending order (A-Z, low to high), and clicking again reverses the order. An arrow icon indicates the current sort direction. Sorting automatically resets to the first page.
Understanding Results
How are the scores calculated?
Scores are calculated on a scale of 0-100, based on pronunciation accuracy, fluency, integrity, and rhythm. The overall score is a weighted combination of these factors, with accuracy being the primary component. Each word receives an individual score, and sentence-level analysis provides additional insights.
What do the color-coded words mean?
Words are color-coded based on their pronunciation scores: green indicates excellent pronunciation (high scores), amber/yellow shows good pronunciation with room for improvement, and red highlights words that need more practice. This visual feedback helps you quickly identify areas that need attention.
What is pause analysis and why is it important?
Pause analysis identifies unnatural hesitations or breaks in your speech. Appropriate pauses are natural, but excessive or poorly-timed pauses can affect fluency. Our system highlights pauses longer than 0.3 seconds, with special attention to pauses over 1 second, which may indicate hesitation or difficulty with certain words or phrases.
How does the Listen and Retell practice work?
After selecting a topic, you can listen to the audio recording or script to understand the key points. Then record your retelling or upload an audio file. Our system will evaluate your speech and compare it with the original script, providing detailed feedback on accuracy, fluency, and key point coverage.
Why are AI TTS-generated standard voices rejected?
Xunfei ISE systematically rejects AI TTS voices (including Google Gemini TTS) but accepts real human voices. This is by design, not a bug.
The system first determines: "Is this a credible human reading?" rather than just evaluating pronunciation quality.
AI TTS: Non-human statistical characteristics → rejected
Human voice: Natural acoustic randomness → accepted
